India Now Has Over 67.9 Crores GSM Subscribers

The total number of GSM subscribers in India has gone past the 67.9 Crores mark, as of July, 2012. Bharti Airtel by adding 15 Lakhs new subscribers has established themselves as the market leader. The number of GSM users in the month of June was 67.735 Crores. Following Airtel and on the second position is Vodafone, which added 12 Lakhs subscribers and took their total number of subscribers to 15.5 Crores, as reported by COAI (Cellular Operators Association of India). Among the worst performing subscribers there were Videocon and Uninor, who lost their 2G licenses after the Supreme Court verdict. This caused them significant loss of subscribers. Uninor came down to 4.449 Crores of total subscribers after losing 10 Lakhs subscribers by the end of July 2012, Videocon on the other hand lost 4.1 Lakhs, which bright their customer base to 51.6 Lakhs. Videocon recently announced that they will be cutting down operations in around four of their 13 active circles to make ensure best fund utilization and for taking part in the 2G auction from a better financial position. Among the other service providers who gained some subscribers there is Idea Cellular which added 5 Lakhs users and now has 11.8 Crores subscriber base. Aircel also gained 3 Lakhs subscribers and took its subscriber base to 6.5 Crores users. BSNL and MTNL were unmoved with subscriber base of 9.46 Crores and 52.2 Lakhs correspondingly, without any loss or gain.
