Kerala : The First State To Have Digital Superhighway

Information Kerala Mission (IKM) in association with the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has launched the Digital Superhighway that will link all the panchayats in Kerala.

The data transfer speed will be faster than normal internet bandwidth with increased security features. It is possible through an exclusive VPN (Virtual private network), net work has been launched by the Minister for panchayats and social welfare M.K Muneerat a function held in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. In MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching) cloud new form of internet data transfer termed as VPNoBB (VPN over Broadband) will function as a private virtual network

After two years of testing VPN with the MPLS links got 512 Kbps speed. The major advantage said by Mr. Sadat is that VPN has a great efficiency in data storage and is difficult to hack the data as data will be transferred in encrypted form. “Sulekha” was the first application to use the digital super highway, which was designed to monitor and formulate nearly two lakhs annual decentralized plan projects of local governments.

As informed by Mr. Sadat, The applications developed such as for file status monitoring, building permits, disbursement of social welfare pensions etc. can be make available with VPM facility.
