Nokia, Sony, Samsung, & Qualcomm Forms an in-Location Alliance to Enhance Indoor Navigation

In the latest announcement from Samsung Electronics, Nokia, Qualcomm, and Sony, the companies informed that they would be forming an In-Location Alliance, for improving the indoor positioning accuracy. Indoor positioning is the latest frontier for the mobile services, as there isn’t any precise service to let you figure out where you are in a sports arena or a mall, by means of your smartphone. This primarily is because of the inadequacy of GPS coverage in those particular regions. In addition to enhancing the accuracy of navigation in such locations, the In-Location Alliance will also be prioritizing the less power consumption and making technology easy to implement and use. The main fundamental technologies that will be used for Indoor navigation include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. Many modern mobiles still uses these technologies, which makes it a good beginning for the efforts made by the alliance. The testing for the new feature will begin in 2012, although the incorporation in smartphones and the first commercial version will arrive sometime next year. Once the Indoor navigation comes into play it will open doors for several new services and we are surprised to see Google and Apple not showing interest in this. Considering the fact that both Google and Apple have shown keen interest in indoor navigation and location sector by launching apps recently, they should be the first ones to take a step in that direction.
