Telecom Operators Cannot Charge Extra for Calls & SMSs on ‘BlackOut’ Days

Be it Diwali, New Years Eve, or any major festival around India, the standard tariff plans does not seem to apply on those special occasions. The call & SMS charges go up on such occasions, which has been a major concern for many users. However, that all has ended.

Telecom Operators Cannot Charge Extra for Calls & SMSs on ‘BlackOut’ Days According to the latest TRAI directive issued, the Telecom operators now cannot charge the customers extra for SMSes or Calls beyond their on hand tariff plans on these 'blackout days'. In their statement, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said, “Telecom operators can not charge calls or SMSes more than the rate of the tariff plan in which the customer is enrolled.” 'Blackout days’ are the days, on which the service provider doesn’t allow concessional or free calls and SMSes offered by them under certain packages or plans. Diwali, New Year, Holi etc. are some of the ‘Blackout days’ in India.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) also told that the operators’ needs to intimate the consumers in advance, before every blackout day and the occasion / date of it should also be provided.

TRAI also asked the telecom operators to provide the complete list of blackout days for respective years on their websites, prior to the start of the calendar year. The list shall also be published service area wise, together with the tariff plans of the operator. The new guidelines are all in addition to the already present guidelines, according to which the number of blackout days shall not be more than five in a year and there cannot be an alteration after the consumer has subscribed to the package.
