Microsoft Windows XP support terminating in one year

Microsoft Windows XP will come to an official end in one year from today. Microsoft says that on April 8, 2014, all extended support will end for the best operating system the company has ever released.

It means that the company will stop providing bug fixes, updates, and other technical support for the Windows XP OS, potentially leaving users without any protection from future malware.

Each software product (in this case, the operating system) has its own life and support cycle, says the company in its statement. Windows operating systems are applied with the basic support (called mainstream) for the first few years, which includes ongoing updates and security maintenance. At the end of the main support, the extended support is applied during which only security gaps are fixed, if any are detected. At the end of the extended maintenance period, any OS updates are terminated.

While users in developed countries such as Australia and Singapore have mostly upgraded to newer versions of Windows-the Windows XP install base for these two markets has dropped to around 11 percent. According to source, almost 40% of all PC’s in the world still run Windows XP.

Besides Windows XP, Microsoft will also stop supporting Office 2003 from next April.
